What is art-based coaching?

Maybe you've heard the phrase and felt curious. Maybe you've been sitting with something you can't quite put into words: a loss, a transition, a quiet sense that something needs to shift. And you're wondering if there's another way in.

Art-based coaching might be that way.

But first, let me clear something up.

It's Not About Making Art

I know. That sounds strange coming from someone who asks you to create at the start of every session.

But art-based coaching isn't about creating something beautiful. It's not about technique, talent, or whether you've picked up a brush since third grade. It's about using the process of making: the colors you reach for, the marks you make, the way art surprises you. All of it becomes a doorway into something deeper.

The art is a tool. You are the focus.

So What Actually Happens?

In an art-based coaching session, we begin with intention. What are you carrying right now? What feels murky, heavy, or unresolved? We don't need a perfect answer. Just a place to start.

Then you make something. It might be abstract. It might be messy. It almost certainly won't look the way you imagined.

That's the point.

Afterward, we reflect together. What came up while you were creating? What surprised you? What did you avoid? The painting becomes a mirror, a way of seeing what's already inside you, just waiting to be acknowledged.

This is where the real work happens. Not in the art. In the conversation the art makes possible.

Who Is This For?

Art-based coaching tends to resonate with people who:

  • Are going through a major life transition: a divorce, a career change, an empty nest, a loss

  • Feel stuck and aren't sure why, or can't find the words to explain it

  • Have tried traditional talk therapy but want something that engages more of themselves

  • Are drawn to creativity but don't identify as "an artist"

  • Are ready to look inward but want a gentler, more intuitive way in

You don't need any art experience. You don't need to know what you want to say before you arrive. You just need a willingness to show up and see what emerges.

How Is This Different From Art Therapy?

This is a question I get often, and it's a good one.

Art therapy is a clinical practice, conducted by licensed therapists trained to diagnose and treat mental health conditions. It's an important and powerful field.

Art-based coaching works in the space of growth, exploration, and self-discovery rather than clinical treatment. Think of it like a sanctuary: a place to reconnect with yourself, find clarity, and move forward with more intention.

If you're navigating a mental health condition, working with a licensed therapist is important. But if you're feeling stuck, lost, or simply hungry for more meaning, coaching might be exactly what you're looking for.

What Makes It Powerful

Here's what I've witnessed again and again, both in my own journey and in the people I work with:

Words have limits. We can talk around something for months and never quite reach it. But a painting, made intuitively and without overthinking, can go straight there. Colors carry emotion. Shapes hold memory. The act of creating bypasses the part of us that wants to stay safe and controlled, and lets something true come through.

That's not mystical. That's just what happens when we get out of our heads and into our hands.

Ready to Find Out More?

If something in this post resonated with you, I'd love to connect. I offer 1:1 art-based coaching sessions via Zoom. Some simple art supplies are needed: paper, a few paints, and maybe some pencils. Use what you have.

You can also experience this work in person at one of my small-group Paint From Your Soul™ workshops in SE Portland, where we paint together in an intimate, unhurried setting.

You don't need to figure it out first. You just need to begin.
